SAWYER’S STOMACH churned with hunger as he breathed in the delicious aroma of the pot roast Mary Beth was heating on the stove. His mouth watered so much it took everything he had not to jump up out of his seat and grab the food out of her hands. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had pot roast. Or potato salad. Or even green beans. His last foster family’s idea of gourmet eating had been canned spaghetti and a pack of fruit snacks to round out the meal. Although that wasn’t the case when they had a social worker visit. Then he’d gotten meat loaf, which hadn’t been too bad. But once the social worker left, it was back to ramen noodles and peanut butter.
He watched Mary Beth work. She seemed to be at home in the kitchen and heated up the meal with ease. His cooking skills were limited to opening a can or a jar, putting a plate in the microwave, and pushing start.
Come to think of it, where is the microwave? He looked around the spotless kitchen, noticing for the first time that there wasn’t a microwave in sight. Or a toaster. Or a coffeemaker. None of the things his parents had kept in their kitchen. The counters were empty except for the food Mary Beth was making. He also noticed there wasn’t a light on in the kitchen. When he looked up at the ceiling, he didn’t see one.
Weird.
“Here you go.” Mary Beth put a plate in front of him. The steam from the pot roast and green beans filled his nostrils. He’d never smelled anything so good. She then set down a glass of cold milk. But he didn’t dive into the food right away. “What about Johnny? Is there enough for him?”
“Ya. I saved him plenty. And he can get food anytime.” She sat across from him, her apple and cheese plate in front of her.
He picked up his fork. “Aren’t you having any?”
“I’m fine with this. I’m not that hungry anyway.”
He picked up a forkful of potato salad and moved it toward his mouth, stopping halfway when he saw Mary Beth with her head bowed and eyes closed. She was praying. He waited for her to finish, more out of politeness than respect for her prayer, then shoved the salad in his mouth. The flavors exploded in his mouth. Awesome.
Johnny came downstairs, looking irritated. “Micah’s a stubborn kid. He didn’t want to go to sleep, but I knew he was tired.” He looked at Sawyer’s plate, then at Mary Beth. “Where’s mine?”
Mary Beth picked up an apple slice. “Over there. It’s still warm.”
“Why didn’t you fix me a plate?”
“I didn’t know when you’d be back. You’re capable of dishing out your own food. Don’t be such a boppli.”
He gave her a smirk, then pulled out a plate from the cabinet and started slapping food on it. He plopped the plate on the table, and then, just like his sister had, he dipped his head and closed his eyes.
